On a
Mother’s Day Weekend along with a Full Moon, it was time to put on some dirt
track racing action. With the
mini-stocks scheduled off, the raceway carried in 75 teams ready to get the job
done along with nine spectator racers.
With a healthy car count, an equally healthy fan count, which we
discovered included a visitor from Florida,
one from Utah, and one from Washington State;
it was a great show well worth the price of admission.
Joseph Snow was the featured driver, who had
his car on display in the general admission section prior to the races. Joseph signed pictures, and met a lot of
fans. As he went to the track for his
heat race, he gave those same fans something to remember, as he was collected
in a turn 3 incident placing him on his side.
The crew rolled him back over, the car was checked out, he was back
underway.
After
completing the annual spectator races, it was time for feature action. The Texana Classic Dwarfs were the first
group out and the crowd provided them with a standing ovation as they carried
in the largest car count of the night.
The point’s leader prior to the night was Andrew
Cline by five points who was
followed by Willie Veach Jr. Due to a heat race incident, Cline started at
the end of the field and Veach started at the front. Veach led the event from start to finish and
Cline moved all the way from the back to a third place finish, getting
recognition as the “hard charger” of the night.
The Texana Classic Dwarfs are always good for spectacular competition
and this night was no exception. The
group ran with one caution and the crowd roared with excitement.

When the
Bombers rolled out, it was the three lady drivers to the front in recognition
of Mothers Day. Jackie Burnett and the
birthday girl Janet Perks were on the front with Sandra
Hudgeons on the inside of Row 2. Interestingly enough Perks didn’t need the
additional graces as she won her heat race and had already earned her starting
position. As the green dropped, it was
Perks to the early lead with Nic Priem
in hot pursuit. Priem eventually passed
Perks and Priem would go on to win the feature with Perks in 2nd.

Following
the Bombers it was time for Limited Modifieds.
Of special interest coming into the night was that Paul White had won three straight features. Track owner, Bruce Tesch placed a bounty on
White with White’s permission which would start with an extra $100 for the
winner if they could beat White, fair and square, with White finishing the
feature. If it couldn’t be done this
week, it would go up by another $100 at the next event and continue forward
after that. Well, the founder of the
“Last Minute Racing” team decided he didn’t want to let the bounty build up as
he blistered the Texana oval and cruised to victory collecting the bounty in
the first week.

Then it
was time for some Hot Stock Truck action.
10 of the trucks rolled out to the take the feature and just as the fans
did for the Texana Classic Dwarfs, the crowd roared with excitement and gave a
standing ovation. In possibly a first it
was three members of the same family running in the same race with Russell Bloom, Justin Bloom, and Penny Bloom who is
mom to Justin and wife to Russell. Penny
started on the pole in recognition of Mothers Day. Unfortunately a pile up in turn 2 collected
Penny and a few other competitors to sideline them for the event. Back underway it would be Greg Turner leading
the majority of the event. Late in the
event, John Leita attempted to pass
and the two collided. This opened the
door for Chris Shafer who had been
waiting patiently and Shafer would take the win.

As the
super stocks took the green it was AJ Dancer
to the early lead. As the event
progressed, GW Hessong was carefully working his way through the field and took
the lead coming out of turn 4 on the last lap just edging out Dancer with
Hessong getting the win by half a car length.

With the
modifieds, it was part 2 for the bounty hunters. But, this time it was not to be claimed as Paul White would win his fourth straight modified
feature. The bounty will go up by
another $100 next event on May 16th with someone having the chance
to pocket a total of $1,000. Paul White and Josh Majek led the field to green and
White would head to the lead with young Majek in pursuit. There were several drivers hanging it out on
the outside cushion up against the wall providing a spectacular show for the
fans.
